Club watched the BL episode of Genshiken Friday night
Genshiken's the last show of the night, and episode 5 was the last Genshiken episode for the week, so not a lot of folks were still in the room - just 5 of us. So there wasn't as much of a reaction as some might have expected, especially because we'd just sat through Tanaka and Ohno's romantic fumblings. In the end, only one person decided to bail out, and that was at least partly because it was 11:30 and he had to be up early in the morning.

The episode seemed a little far out there to me - in going beyond manga Ogiue's pairing up of Sasahara and Madarame to involving pretty much the entire Genshiken in a boys' love fantasy, it paints anime Ogiue less as somebody with an otaku-level obsession, and more as an obsessive-compulsive personality with an otaku focus. I realize that this is really just the production staff having fun and projecting it through Ogiue, and that in complaining about it I'm arguably being at least as obsessive as I'm saying she is. I guess I just think that if you're going to include folks like Kuchiki and Kugayama and Tanaka in that whole setup, you might as well work in Haraguchi and the original chairman as well.

I was waiting for the other shoe to drop with ADV
After all their other belt-tightening announcements recently, the Rightstuf sale led me to believe we'd see some other bad news from ADV. Like, I don't know, putting a whole bunch of their recently-licensed titles on hiatus. Apparently icv2 has removed that article (though Google has it cached), which suggests that ADV knows how bad it sounds in light of the end of Geneon, and that ADV wants to avoid being damaged by those perceptions (since it sounds like they're basically trying to get these licenses available again at the cost of having to work around a troublesome partnership).

On one hand, the situation doesn't appear to be as bad as posters at ANN were imagining. On the other hand, we're still looking at a situation where a single soured business relationship can impact the availability of literally dozens of series, some of which have already been fully released (Utawarerumono, for example). All in all, yet another sign the US anime industry isn't in great shape.

Once, I would have said that Excel Saga contained the best use of an afro as a Dragonball reference
These days I'd say that it contains the best male use of an afro to make a Dragonball reference. The best female use is in Hare+Guu Deluxe. Which is best overall? I'm honestly not sure...

Like the fist of an angry goddess
An angry goddess who might be getting a second season, that is. Interesting to note that this announcement is supposed to happen on July 7th - yes, there's the 7/7/7 bit, but also the fact that Tanabata is celebrated on July 7th. Which is pretty meaningful to those who've read the novel translations...

AX2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center
I'm not too sure how I feel about that. On one hand, it's a lot closer to me - enough so that I'd feel OK about commuting to and from the con every day, I think. On the other hand, I'd pretty much have to - I understand that the nearest hotels are about as far from LACC as the Westin was from the LBCC, and that's a fairly low-quality Holiday Inn. You have to go significantly further out to get to other lodgings, and you aren't in the best area in LA - fairly safe during the day, but not so much late at night...(though ongoing gentrification has supposedly made this less of an issue, you're still talking about a place that's just a couple of blocks away from Skid Row).

(For the curious, here are LAPD's crime stats for that area during the period covered by AX2007 - and no, I don't know what a "normal" rate of crime is to compare that against).

Apparently there's a train stop (Blue Line IIRC) just across the street from the Convention Center - a good thing, because I understand that there also aren't many restaurants nearby. Yes, it's got the distant hotels of Long Beach combined with the distant restaurants of Anaheim.

FWIW, I've seen a number of online discussions about next year's venue (at Cosplay.com, ANN, and AX's own message boards); they seem to run about 10:1 against. Then again, people who feel strongly about the matter are probably more likely to post.

I really don't know. I've been going to Anime Expo since 1999. AX2008 is the first time I'm inclined to not only skip getting a hotel room, but to skip going to the con altogether (since a large part of the fun for me is hanging around after hours).

yo~
I guess I haven't been posting here often since I started putting the posters and discounts up on the club site. Well...it's not as if I've had a lot to say in the interim. Oh, there were exceptions - the election weighed heavily on my mind, but I could barely talk about the current administration without getting angry; even now I feel like a sick person who's just felt his fever break - the worst may be over, but a lot of the symptoms will take a while to go away.

Aside from that, most of what I'd write about has been "stuff I've found on the internet". Which actually seems like a good thing to cover in this post.

Starting from the random end of things: my current icon comes from the Azumanga Tarot. I'm not sure I agree with all the choices, but I think that quite a few (e.g. Death) are very well-chosen. I wonder what the minor aracana would be like? "Ah, the 9 of Cats, intersecting the 4 of Pigtails..."

It looks like Genshiken is being continued as an OVA. Apparently the release will mirror the previous release of Kujibiki Unbalance with Genshiken TV - just as we got one (essentially OVA) episode of Kujibiki per 4 episodes of Genshiken, so too will there be one OVA of Genshiken with each 4 episode set of the new Kujibiki TV series. And all this for only $150/4 episode set, at least in Japan. Here's a source for some of those details. Or, for those of you who are comfortable with Japanese, the Genshiken site and the Kujibiki site.

And finally...your moment of zen )

Based on this, I think we can pick about half a dozen features that are likely to be popular, as well as get some additional show ideas (notably Samurai 7).

Caltech Anime Society, um, "stuff"
Sometime in the next few days I'll probably be asking for ideas for next year's schedule. If you've had dozens of ideas for shows we could watch next year, you might want to start making a list of suggestions now.

Something I probably won't be asking the officers list (but on which I'm open to suggestions) is a redesign of the club's web site. Well, I'm not looking at throwing away what we have for the most part; instead, I'm interested in what I should change (stylesheet and formatting? images? include new content like the deals page, which was created so that I have a more appropriate place than this journal to post Rightstuf discounts? Perhaps an archive of poster images?)

And of course, this week's poster )
